EAST VILLAGE — Stretches of Third Avenue and East Ninth St. remained closed as of Thursday afternoon as workers continued repairs on a building facade that came loose Wednesday evening.

Police have closed Third Avenue between East Eighth and East Ninth streets, as well as East Ninth Street between Third and Fourth avenues to allow for repairs to the facade of 115 E. Ninth St., which has been declared "in danger of collapse," according to Department of Building records.

The fire department began an inspection of loose bricks on the facade near the corner of East Ninth Street and Third Avenue at about 5:35 p.m. on Wednesday, an FDNY spokesman said.

The Department of Buildings is currently working to secure the facade to prevents its crumbling, then will carry out a partial demolition to rebuild the unstable part of the facade, according to a department spokesman, who was unable to estimate a timeline for the repairs.

The department has issued a vacate order on three units in the building, declaring them “unsafe to occupy,” according to department records.
