BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — The cat’s out of the bag!

Brooklyn Cat Cafe opened Saturday at 149 Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn Heights.

The cat cafe, the first permanent one in Brooklyn, is run by the Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition.

Between 12 and 15 cats roam the cozy new space where prospective pet owners can play with the animals.

While the cat cafe doesn’t serve food or drinks, Brooklyn Cat Cafe will be partnering with the nearby Atlantic Bagels Cafe, which will donate 10 percent of their proceeds to BBAWC for every purchase made by a Cat Cafe visitor.

The cafe serves as a community space that will host events like cat yoga, affordable vaccine clinics and movie nights.

“We’re a community space where people can come in and play with an adoptable pet and have a great time,” said BBAWC president Anne Levin. “We want to be here for the long term and see how we can best help in the community.”

The cafe also offers pet therapy sessions for those who are suffering from or have experienced trauma, according to Levin.

“Animals have really been shown to help with trauma and recovery,” Levin said. “You just feel better with a kitten purring in your lap.”

Levin anticipates the new cat cafe will be as successful as the pop-up cafe BBAWC opened in Fort Greene last fall, which saw more than 4,000 visitors and 60 cats adoptions in just 10 weeks.

Adoption fees will start at $100 for adult cats, $125 for kittens and $175 for a pair of kittens. The cats will be adopted out either in pairs or sent to homes that already have other cats.

Brooklyn Cat Cafe is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends, with expanded hours coming this summer.
