BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — A new sidewalk café may make its way to Greene Avenue just in time for the summer.

The owners of bar and restaurant Captain Dan’s Good Time Tavern received approval from Bedford-Stuyvesant’s Community Board 3 on Monday night to place seating outside.

The planned outdoor area would run along the length of the business which is at 497 Greene Ave. on the corner of Nostrand Avenue.

Owners Carmen Mello and Adrienne French also head the Anchored Inn in East Williamsburg and brought their new bar to Bed-Stuy in February.

Captain Dan’s menu includes selections like a fried chicken sandwich, shrimp and grits and a soft shell crab sandwich.

The outdoor seating would have room for 14, Mello said, and would be open until 11 p.m. on weekdays and 12 a.m. on weekends, with flexibility depending on residents’ concerns.

Some attendees at Monday’s meeting expressed worries over drinking outdoors and noise levels, but the community board ultimately gave its support with a 21-13 vote.

“It’s definitely more of a restaurant than a bar vibe,” Mello told the crowd, stressing that the business is for the community.

“The last thing we want to do as a neighborhood establishment is inconvenience any of our neighbors.”

Captain Dan’s sidewalk café application will go before the Department of Consumer Affairs and City Council review for approval.
