A baby otter and a colony of fruit bats have made their debuts at the Bronx Zoo.
The Asian small-clawed otter pup was born this spring and is well suited for a semi-aquatic life thanks to its webbed feet, elongated body and dense, waterproof fur, according to the zoo.
The species is found throughout Southeast Asia in places including India, the Philippines, parts of southern China and Taiwan. But their population is shrinking, and they are classified as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
A colony of Rodrigues fruit bats have arrived in the zoo as well. The creatures are also known as Rodrigues flying foxes and are found only in the western Indian Ocean on the island of Rodrigues, according to the Bronx Zoo.
They are classified as critically endangered by the IUCN.
