MIDTOWN — A cashier at Saks Off 5th gave away more than $5,000 worth of merchandise by pretending to scan items at the checkout counter or voiding purchases, police said.

Between March 12 and April 8, New Jersey resident Aboubakar Daho helped thieves steal a total of $5,390.82 worth of items from the store at 125 E. 57th St., police and a complaint filed with the Manhattan District Attorney’s office said.

After the unidentified patrons brought their items up to the checkout counter, Daho, 42, would either make it look like he’d scanned the bar code attached to the items or scan the bar code and then cancel the sale, the DA’s office said.

Saks Off 5th lost $1,639.94 worth of merchandise on March 12, $286.96 on March 16, $444.95 on March 20, $479.96 on March 30 and $2,539.01 on April 8 to an unknown number of thieves, the complaint said.

Daho was arrested and charged with grand larceny, according to the complaint.

He was released on his own recognizance on April 14 and is expected to appear in court on June 21, the DA’s office said.

An attorney for Daho and representatives for Saks Off 5th did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday.
