MIDTOWN — A thief stole more than $1,500 worth of Essie nail polish from a Duane Reade — marking the third such theft of the product at that location in recent months, police said.

An employee at the convenience store at 22 W. 48th St. told police that surveillance video showed a man entering the store around 7:21 p.m. on April 11, taking $1,581 worth of Essie polish off the shelves, putting it into a bag and walking out without paying.

Back in January, the same store lost a total of $2,381 worth of the same nail polish to thieves in two separate incidents.

An employee working at the Duane Reade after the first theft — during which $1,632 worth of polish was stolen — said the thief made off with the "whole Essie section.”

An employee working at the store Tuesday declined to comment on the most recent incident.

Earlier this month, a thief stole nearly $3,000 worth of Essie polish from another Duane Reade at 1370 Sixth Ave. — the “majority” of the store’s Essie collection, a manager said.

And on Christmas Day, a thief nabbed $1,128 worth of Essie nail polish from a Duane Reade in the Financial District.

Midtown North Deputy Inspector John Hart said police have “seen a few [nail polish thefts] around the borough.”

“They are fenced to be sold in smaller stores, but we do not have solid information about who or where yet,” he added.
