MIDTOWN — A thief stole nearly $3,000 worth of Essie nail polish from a Midtown Duane Reade — the majority of the store’s collection, police and a manager said.

A 34-year-old employee at the Duane Reade at 1370 Sixth Ave. told police that around 4:56 p.m. on April 2, an unknown man swiped 315 bottles of various Essie nail polishes from a shelf inside the store and hid them in a bag.

After stashing the nail polishes, the thief walked past all the registers and left the store without paying for them, police said.

The man managed to get away with 252 Essie nail polishes valued at $2,359 and 63 Essie nail polishes valued at $599 — a total of $2,958 worth of nail polish. It was unclear why polishes have different prices.

A manager at the store, who declined to give her name, said the the thief had not yet been caught.

“The majority of [the Essie collection] was stolen,” she said.

The Sixth Avenue convenience store was not the first Duane Reade targeted by nail polish thieves.

In February, a thief nabbed $749 worth of Essie nail polish from a Duane Reade on West 48th Street that had already lost $1,632 worth of nail polish to a shoplifter the month before.

On Christmas day, meanwhile, a woman stole more than $1,000 worth of Essie nail polish from a Duane Reade in the Financial District.
