Elderly Woman Struck and Killed on Hylan Boulevard, Police Say

By Nicholas Rizzi | April 12, 2016 11:43am

GREAT KILLS — An elderly woman was struck and killed by a driver Tuesday morning, police said.

Mary Cerqua, 73, was walking at the crosswalk at Hylan Boulevard and Wilman Avenue at about 9:30 a.m. when a 2011 Nissan, driven by Deborah Pecoraro, made a left turn onto Hylan Boulevard and struck her, the NYPD said.

Cerqua, of Eltingville, was taken to Staten Island University Hospital North where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Pecoraro, 54, remained on scene and was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care, according to police.

Hylan Boulevard has been dubbed the "Boulevard of Death" by some activists and accounted for eight traffic deaths last year, up from four in 2014.
