Saturday, April 9

Snug Harbor Open House

Where: Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Livingston
When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Snug Harbor Cultural Center will host an open house featuring new exhibits and the inauguration of two new spaces at the former Sailor's retirement community. The day includes the opening of the "Unseen and Unknown" exhibit featuring photographer Accra Shepp's images of Staten Island and the inaugural exhibit for the new Snug Harbor Commons Galleries, "SOS: Stories of Staten Island." The exhibit will feature work from several local artists and the space is dedicated to providing space to the borough's young artists. The event will also celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Snug Harbor Dance Center with two free classes.

New York City BBQ Cookoff

Where: Historic Richmond Town, 441 Clarke Ave., Richmond Town
When: 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The city's only Kansas City Barbeque Society competition returns to Staten Island for the fifth year in a row, bringing nearly 50 cooks from across the country — and one from England — to show off their best briskets, ribs and more. Judges include New York Jets offensive line coach Ron Heller and German BBQ distributor and contest organizer Tom Hermann. The event is rain or shine and tickets are $12.75 online, $15 at the door for adults and $6 online, $8 at the door for children.

Green Dreams Opening Reception

Where: Greenbelt Nature Center, 700 Rockland Ave., Willowbrook
When: Noon

The Labyrinth Arts Collective will host an opening for its new exhibit, Green Dreams, featuring art made with recyclable materials from artists including John Exit, Patty Kelli, Al Diaz and more. The event will also have workshops for children led by Stephanie Kosinski and origami sculptor Jerome Walker starting at 1 p.m.

Island Landscapes Film Screening and Artist Panel

Where: Staten Island Museum, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Livingston
When: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Staten Island Museum will host a screening of three films that show the borough's landscape, followed by a moderated panel discussion with the filmmakers. Movies to be shown are Marylou and Jerome Bongiorno‘s anaglyphic 3-D film "SI:3D," Chad Aaronson's drone video of Staten Island's boat graveyard and Vincent Verdi’s infrared time-lapse video of Snug Harbor. The panel discussion also includes poet Dr. Marguerite Maria Rivas. Tickets are $15 and include museum admission.

"Remember When?" Photography Exhibit Opening

Where: Creative Photographers' Guild Gallery, 814 Richmond Terrace, Livingston
When: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Creative Photographers' Guild will host an opening for its new exhibit, "Remember When?" which features old black and white shots taken throughout the years from several photographers. Photographer Bruce Cohn is the featured photographer.

STATEN ISLAND 24:00 - A Day in the Life of Staten Island

Where: Staten Island MakerSpace, 450 Front St., Stapleton
When: 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Staten Island MakerSpace will host a one-day exhibit showing the work of 14 photographers who spent March 23 capturing and documenting 24 hours on Staten Island. STATEN ISLAND 24:00 is curated by Gail Middleton, Michael McWeeney and Terry Plater and refreshments will be served.

 Triennial Talks: Staten Island as Place

Where: Alice Austen House Museum, 2 Hylan Blvd., Rosebank
When: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Alice Austen House Museum will host a discussion and Q&A with photographers Gale Wisdom, Ed Coppola, Michael McWeeney and Robin Michals on the built and natural environments of the borough. The talk is part of the museum's "Staten Island Unlimited" exhibit, which features 35 photographers showing different scenes and people of the borough.

Staten Island's Brewery Barons Book Talk

Where: Flagship Brewing Company, 40 Minthorne St., Tompkinsville
When: 2 p.m.

Historian Patricia Salmon will host a book talk and presentation on her new book, "Staten Island's Brewery Barons," which traces the history of beer brewed in the borough. The event is free of charge.

Monthly Sunset Dance Party

Where: Liedy's Shore Inn, 748 Richmond Terrace, Livingston
When: 7 p.m.

DJ Kitty, voted the best DJ in the borough, continues her monthly dance party where she'll spin songs from the 60s on 45 rpm vinyl.
