PARK SLOPE — Like a caterpillar turning into a colorful winged creature, a small South Slope park will soon be transformed.

The Butterfly Garden on 18th Street and Seventh Avenue is set to get $550,000 in upgrades including new fencing, benches, trash receptacles, a drinking fountain and "watering source," a Parks Department spokeswoman said.

The makeover will also expand planted areas and reconstruct paved sections of the park, and add a "small outdoor educational program area," the spokeswoman said.

The project is now being designed but there's no exact timeline yet for when the upgrades will happen, the spokeswoman said. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams provided $450,000 and Mayor Bill de Blasio chipped in $100,000.

The Butterfly Garden was once a neglected spot where people dumped trash, but volunteers adopted it in the early 2000s and worked to spruce it up. Today kids from nearby schools including P.S. 10 and M.S. 88 all use the mini park. Last spring students from P.S. K053 visited to install a bench at the park.
