On Monday, the White House hosted a live-streamed performance of songs from "Hamilton," the award-winning musical that portrays the life of former New York resident and Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton.
In a speech delivered before the performance began, President Barack Obama said that the show's message — and his own concerns about the affordability of tickets to "Hamilton" — informed his decision to bring the musical to the White House.
"The show reminds us that this nation was built by more than a few great men, and that it is an inheritance that belongs to all of us," Obama said.
"Hamilton's not just for people who can score a ticket to a pricey Broadway show, it is a story for all of us, and about all of us."
Before leaving the podium, Obama also praised the show's producers for working with the New York Public Schools, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Gilder Lehrman Institute to "make sure that thousands of low-income students have a chance to see the show."
