Uptick in Slashings Prompts Safety Meeting in Jackson Heights

By Katie Honan | March 2, 2016 4:56pm

JACKSON HEIGHTS — A spate of slashings and other crime has prompted a meeting Thursday in Jackson Heights.

The event, sponsored by Sen. Jose Peralta, Assemblyman Francisco Moya and Assemblyman Michael Den Dekker, will be held at the Renaissance Charter School from 6 until 8 p.m.

Representatives from the NYPD will give a presentation on safety measures, with a special section focusing on students. Representatives from the crossing guard union will also be on hand to discuss safety for students traveling to school.

The town hall is a direct response to an uptick in slashings across the city, the organizers said.

“People are clearly concerned by the rise in the number of slashings and stabbings, so we are organizing this town hall meeting on public safety in an effort to inform the public about how to best protect themselves,” Peralta said.
