MELROSE — A famed church in the South Bronx could soon become an official landmark.

The city's Landmarks Preservation Commission prioritized the borough's Immaculate Conception Church at 375-395 E. 150th St. for landmark status during a public meeting on Tuesday meant to help clear up a backlog of sites that has existed for decades.

The complex consists of a church, convent and priests' residence and was designed in 1887 by architect Henry Bruns.

The structure is an example of Romanesque Revival-style ecclesiastical architecture, and its layout includes a 125-foot tall centrally located tower and spire.

The only other site in The Bronx that the LPC prioritized for landmarking was the 65 Schofield Street House on City Island.

Three sites in the borough were removed from the landmarks calendar: the First Presbyterian Church of Williamsbridge, the Samuel D. Babcock House and the 6 Ploughman's Bush Building.

Sites that the city prioritized for designation will be brought back to the LPC by the end of the year for a vote.
