In Bold Colors: An Exhibit by Orlando Richards

Where: Kentler International Drawing Space, 353 Van Brunt St., Red Hook
When: Thursday to Sunday, Noon to 5 p.m.

Orlando Richards, a Brooklyn-based artist of Jamaican descent, is presenting his first solo exhibition in New York at Red Hook’s Kentler gallery. The show, “In Bold Colors,” features works on paper using media like oil, pastel, acrylic and charcoal. To read an interview with the artist, visit Kentler’s website here.  

"12 Angry Men: True Stories of Being a Black Man in America Today"

Where: The Kumble Theater, 1 University Plaza, Downtown Brooklyn
When: Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., Sunday at 3 p.m.

Check out a theatrical performance based on the book, “12 Angry Men: True Stories of Being a Black Man in America Today.” The cast includes Wendell Pierce from “The Wire” and Roger Robinson of “How to Get Away with Murder.” A pre-show talk is scheduled an hour before each show, giving an opportunity to hear from the community. Tickets are $25, $15 for students, seniors, and groups of 10 or more.

Local Brew Demo

Where: Bitter & Esters, 700 Washington Ave., Prospect Heights
When: 5 to 8 p.m.

Watch a live demonstration of home-brewed beer using locally sourced hops and malt at this free workshop at Bitter & Esters, part of the 2016 NYC Beer Week.

Black Artstory Film: re-work/re-frame

Where: Pratt Institute’s Film/Video Center, 550 Myrtle Ave., Clinton Hill
When: 7 to 9 p.m.

Short films and documentaries by Yisa Fermin, Lindsay Catherine Harris and Esteban del Valle will review and re-frame perceptions of black lives in America. A Q&A with the filmmakers will follow the screenings. This free event is part of Black Artstory, a series of free performances and talks along Myrtle Avenue during black history month. Iyapo Repository: Design Thinking Workshop

Where: MoCADA, 80 Hanson Place, Fort Greene
When: 7 to 10 p.m.

Design heirlooms for the future with the Iyapo Repository, a resource library that collects artifacts made for and by people of African descent. In this workshop, adults will create pieces with conductive fabrics, LED lights and servo motors. Materials and cocktails by EssieSpice will be provided. Tickets are $20 for individual participants, and $10 for Friends of MoCADA.

Slavic Soul Party

The nine-member band “Slavic Soul Party,” specializing in “Balkan funk,” will play a free neighborhood concert at the BRIC House Ballroom.

BAX Upstart Festival 2016

“Book of Life” with the Sunset Park Cinema Club for Kids

Where: Industry City, Factory Floor, 233 37th St., Sunset Park
When: Doors open at 10 a.m.; activities at 10:45 a.m.; screening at 11:45 a.m.

Industry City and Rooftop Films are teaming up for a kid-friendly morning of workshops and activities, followed by a screening of “Book of Life.” Ballet Folklorico Quetzalcoatl will present dance performance for kids and a puppet show.

Colonial Day at the Fort Putnam Redoubt

Where: Fort Greene Park, Fort Putnam Program Area (next to the Visitor’s Center), Fort Greene

Celebrate George Washington’s birthday with a day of colonial activities that will include bread making, apple cobbler baking, colonial games, reenactments and photo opportunities Revolutionary War-era relics.

Agitprop! Conversation

Hear from three artists of the Agitprop! exhibit, Martha Rosler, Nancy Buchanan and Andrea Bowers, at the Brooklyn Museum discuss the intersection of art and activism in their work. The event is free with museum admission.

Free Knitting Class at Slip Stitch Needlecraft

ZINGAY, A Caribbean Comedy

Spirits and specters come to life in this adaptation of Freddie Kissoon’s 1966 one-act comedy about Caribbean folk magic and sorcery. Admission to the family-friendly play is $30.

Mara Rosenbloom Guest Quartet

When: 8 p.m.

There’s a $15 suggested donation for this performance of the Mara Rosenbloom Guest Quartet featuring Rosenbloom on piano, Guillermo Gregorio on clarinet, Masa Kamaguchi on bass and Billy Mintz on drums.

Moonage Daydream: A Songwriters’ Tribute to David Bowie

Where: Jalopy Theater, 315 Columbia St., Columbia Street Waterfront District
When: 9 p.m.

Eighteen songwriters will perform their interpretations of iconic songs from music legend David Bowie, who died on Jan. 10. Proceeds from the evening will benefit WhyHunger. Tickets are priced at $10.

Def Story Slam

Where: BAMCafe at the Peter Jay Sharp Building, 30 Lafayette Avenue, Fort Greene
When: 9 p.m.

Comedians, lyricists and authors share their tales of wild and weird encounters in the city. Hear from storytellers Toshi Reagon, Brian Tate and Carl Hancock Rux, with music by DJ Spencer Blake and other guest artists. This event is free and open to the public.

Sunday, Feb. 21

Diamond Street Fire Relief Happy Hour

Where: Lucky Luna, 167 Nassau Ave., Greenpoint
When: 2 to 5 p.m.

Proceeds from this happy hour go to the victims of the Diamond Street fire who lost their homes last week. They’re also collecting clothing, non-perishable food, toiletries, and monetary donations.
