For some, "the icing on the cake" isn't an idiom — it's a bone of contention.
After DNAinfo New York ran a story about Luckybird Bakery, a new Williamsburg eatery that skimps on icing in its offering of "naked cakes," readers took to Twitter to voice their opinions on the matter.
Do you love extra icing? Do you feel that it detracts from a cake's flavor? Take our poll because WE NEED TO FIGURE THIS OUT.
Below that, see impassioned arguments from both sides:
Some think that a cake sans icing saves calories but takes you straight to hell.
Others greet the new cake as an affirmation of self.
The cakes led many to invoke the divine.
Some even went so far as to allude to the book of Genesis.
Others mused: could a no-icing cake be the totality of human desire?
...or even proof of God's existence?
In fact, anti-icing camps summoned multiple faiths in expressing their enthusiasm for the new spot.
In spite of praising God or Allah for the new shop, pro-icing camp members declared that fans only held faith in the Devil.
Others took issue with those who praise the removal of cake's definitive property...
...and even engaged in some ad hominem attacks...
...while others got an idea for a new business, which would likely do well in Williamsburg.
Even for dismayed icing fans, the new bakery succeeded in opening their eyes to diversity.
Still, one question remains: is the no-icing cake a sign of progress...
