Saturday, Feb. 6

"A Walk Through Moravian Cemetery" Book Talk and Signing

Where: Staten Island Museum, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Livingston
When: 2 p.m.

Local historian and tour guide Richard Simpson will debut his new book, "A Walk Through Moravian Cemetery," tracing the history of the New Dorp burial spot. The book features biographies of more than 350 people buried in the cemetery — including authors, artists, oystermen and some of the borough's earliest colonists — and contributions from other local historians. The event is free with museum admission and signed copies of the book will be for sale.

► Bill Richmond (1763-1829): First Black Sports Superstar

Where: Stapleton Library, 132 Canal St., Stapleton
When: 2 p.m.

Staten Island OutLOUD will kick off their Black History Month events with a talk about the new biography "Richmond Unchained" about bare-knuckle boxer Bill Richmond. Richmond, who the Staten Island OutLOUD calls the first Black sports superstar, was born into slavery on Staten Island in 1763 then moved to England to learn cabinet-making after winning his freedom. While there, Richmond became one of the most popular bare-knuckle boxers of the time and was even involved in the coronation celebrations for King George IV in 1821.

► Cultural Tradition of Losar, the Tibetan New Year

Where: Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, 338 Lighthouse Ave., Lighthouse Hill
When: 2 to 4 p.m.

The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art will celebrate the Tibetan New Year, Losar, with a presentation about the cultural traditions of the holiday by Pema Wangyal, a translator and analyst at the International Campaign for Tibet. The presentation is $6 for adults, $4 for students and seniors.

► Nia-Kuumba

Where: Hub 17, 73 Wave St., Stapleton
When: 6 to 10 p.m.

The Labyrinth Artist Collective will host an free night of art, music and poetry "Nia-Kuumba" based on interpretations of two of the seven principals of Kwanzaa, Nia (purpose) and Kuumba (creativity). The show, curated by J. Montana and Liz Marotti, will feature art by Santra Smith, James Terrell, Revelop and more as well as performances by country singer Franklin Cisco Burns, poet Alexis Monteith and vocalist Choomasi.

Tavern Concert Mara Levine and Caroline Cutreoneo

Where: Historic Richmond Town's Guyon Tavern, 441 Clark Ave., Richmond Town
When: 6 and 8 p.m.

This weekend's unplugged concert in Historic Richmond Town's Guyon Tavern features singer Mara Levine and singer guitarist Caroline Cutroneo performing original and traditional folk and Americana songs. The musicians will be accompanied by fiddler Nancy Moccaldi, flutists Barbara Novick and guests Frank Moccaldi and Don Friedman. Tickets are $11 online, $13 at the door.

Sunday, Feb. 7

Staten Island Seisiún 

Where: Flagship Brewing Company, 40 Minthorne St., Tompkinsville
When: 1 to 4 p.m.

Musicians Linda Hickman and Douglas Barr continue their monthly open sessions of traditional Irish music on Sunday. The free concerts, presented by Staten Island Arts Folklife, include an open session of musicians and listeners to hear Irish folk music and include a "tune of the week" to teach players songs.

► Outdoor Skills: Shelter Building

Where: Blue Heron Nature Center, 222 Poillon Ave., Eltingville
When: 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The Parks Department's Urban Park Rangers will a free workshop on tips and tricks to survive in nature and help people develop skills to be able to create shelter using natural and man-made objects. The program is recommended for children ages 8 and older.

 Science Talk: Freshkills Restoration of a Habitat

Where: Staten Island Museum, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Livingston
When: 2 to 4 p.m.

Staten Island Museum curator of science Will Lenihan will be joined by manager for science and research development at Freshkills Park Cait Field to give a lecture on the project to turn the former Fresh Kills Landfill into a park and restore the habitat. The talk is $15 and includes admission to the museum.

► Chinese New Year: Year of the Monkey

Where: Greenbelt Nature Center, 700 Rockland Ave., Willowbrook
When: 2 to 3 p.m.

The Staten Island Greenbelt Conservancy will celebrate the Chinese New Year with an event teaching the history of the celebration and the symbolism of this year's animal zodiac sign, the monkey. Admission is $8 per person, $6 for Greenbelt Conservancy members, and is appropriate for children ages 5 and older.
