CROWN HEIGHTS — An elderly dog filmed howling in a Crown Heights backyard during January’s historic blizzard has been turned over to an animal rescue group from Long Island, the organization said.
Prince the dog is undergoing veterinary care in Smithtown, New York, thanks to Guardians of Rescue, the group that convinced the “senior” dog’s owners to voluntarily surrender the pooch after a video of Prince left alone in a wooden shed during winter storm Jonas went viral last week.
“Prince is quite a senior and as you can see, his eyesight is very bad,” the group posted on Facebook with photos of the shaggy black dog. “We will have Prince all checked out with our veterinarian and we will keep everyone updated as this still a work in progress.”
Police slapped the owners of the President Street home where Prince lived with a summons for not providing proper shelter to the dog after the Jan. 23 incident was caught on camera by a neighbor.

The ASPCA and the city’s Animal Care & Control sent representatives to the Crown Heights home to check on the dog the day after the blizzard, but couldn’t do more than encourage the owner to properly care for the pet; current laws in New York City regarding shelter of pets do not allow for animals to be seized by authorities or for owners to be charged with more than a ticket.
It’s unclear where Prince will end up after his time with Guardians of Rescue. Inquiries to the group were not immediately returned on Monday.
