11-Year-Old Girl Escapes Man Who Tried to Kidnap Her, Police Say

By Aidan Gardiner | January 29, 2016 10:52am

BROOKLYN — An 11-year-old girl escaped a man who tried to kidnap her a block and a half from her school in East Flatbush Thursday evening, police said.

The girl was waiting for a bus near Rogers Avenue and Albermarle Road about 5:40 p.m. when the suspect pulled up in front of her in a "very old, rusty gray van" and offered her a ride home, NYPD officials said.

She declined and the suspect, holding a wooden stick, stepped out and tried to grab her, police said.

She ran back to her school at 72 Veronica Place and told school safety agents what happened, and they called 911, police said.

The suspect got back into the van and fled, police said. He had not been arrested as of Friday, according to authorities.

The wanted man is described as being about 40 years old, standing 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighing roughly 140 pounds, police said. He was last seen wearing a gray baseball cap, a gray sweater and gray pants, police said.

The 72 Veronica Place campus houses both M.S. 246 Walt Whitman and the Fahari Academy charter school.
