KIPS BAY — A would-be thief tried to break into a car in the parking lot of Bellevue Hospital but ended up getting zapped with a Taser after he was caught in the act, according to a police report.
A Bellevue security guard spotted Michael Martin, 24, tapping on the passenger window of a white car in the hospital parking lot, officials said. When the security guard went to investigate, Martin became aggressive and refused to comply with orders to stay put, police said.
As officers arrived, Martin took off running into traffic on First Avenue and dashed west toward Second Avenue, according to a police report.
Officers repeatedly ordered Martin to get on the ground and put his hands behind his back, but the suspect refused and began flailing his arms and legs in an attempt to avoid being cuffed, police said.
As he continued to resist, an arresting officer shocked Martin with a Taser in order to subdue him, according to a police report.
Prosecutors charged Martin with attempted petty larceny and resisting arrest. A judge released him without bail pending his next court date on March 7, court records show.
A lawyer for Martin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
