NEW YORK CITY — Citi Bike will shut down on Friday night in anticipation of the major winter storm bearing down on the city.

Customers will be unable to rent Citi Bikes starting at 11 p.m. on Friday, around the time meteorologists are projecting the first snowflakes will start falling. Citi Bike riders who have bikes checked out at that time will be able to continue riding until they dock their bikes, according to a spokeswoman.

The length of time the bikeshare service remains closed will depend on weather and road conditions. Updates will be posted to Citi Bike’s Facebook and Twitter pages, the spokeswoman said.

At a press conference Friday afternoon, city officials said meteorologists from the National Weather Service warned the storm could dump anywhere from 12 to 18 inches of snow in the city.

A blizzard warning will be in effect from midnight Friday until 10 a.m. on Sunday, and Mayor de Blasio has warned residents to stay inside as winds potentially blow at 25-35 miles per hour and gusts at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour.

Updated to reflect new snowfall estimates from the National Weather Service.
