Amtrak Modifies Service Ahead of the Season's First Major Snowstorm

NEW YORK CITY — Traveling through the Northeast by train will be a challenge this weekend with Amtrak modifying service ahead of the first major snowstorm expected to hit the region this season.

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard watch for New York City.

Forecasters expect snow accumulations between 8 and 12 inches from Saturday at midnight to Sunday afternoon. Winds between 25 and 35 miles per hour with gusts up to 50 miles per hour are also expected, according to the National Weather Service.

Due to the winter storm forecast, Amtrak has issued modifications or cancelations for trains in and out of New York-Penn Station.

► The following regional services will operate on a modified schedule with fewer trains:

• Acela Express
• Northeast Regional
• Keystone Service between New York and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
• Other services between Virginia and Boston

 The following national services are canceled or truncated to New York:

• Cardinal (New York to Chicago), Train 51 on Jan. 22 and Train 50 on Jan. 23 
• Carolina (Charlotte, North Carolina, to New York), Trains 79 and 80 will not operate on Jan. 22 or Jan. 23
• Crescent (New York to New Orleans), Trains 19 and 20 will not operate on Jan. 22 and Jan. 23
• Palmetto (New York to Savannah, Georgia) Train 89 will not operate on Jan. 23, Train 90 will operate with reduced service between Washington, D.C. and New York on Jan. 23
• Silver Star (New York to Miami), Trains 91 and 92 will operate with reduced service between Miami and Jacksonville on Jan. 22 and Jan. 23
• Silver Meteor (New York to Miami), Trains 97 and 98 will not operate on Jan. 22 and Jan. 23

Passengers with reservations are encouraged to check rail conditions and their train status using Amtrak.com or mobile apps.
