FLATIRON — An employee of a Flatiron fashion store stole tens of thousands of dollars from his employer over the course of more than a year, according to a police report.

Benjamin Lamadrid, 37, stole $38,399.69 from the Marimekko flagship store at 200 Fifth Ave. between Oct. 30, 2014 and Dec. 4, 2015 by filing false returns, officials said.

Lamadrid would routinely ring up past transactions in the system, telling the computer that the customer had returned the item but instead pocketed the cash at the end of his shift, according to a police report.

He was repeatedly spotted on camera during the scheme, and officers caught up with him on Jan. 6 at the store after his employer tipped off authorities, police said.

Lamadrid allegedly confessed to one of the arresting officers, according to a criminal complaint.

Prosecutors charged Lamadrid with grand larceny, and a judge released him without bail pending his next court date on March 22, court records show.

A lawyer for Lamdrid did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
