"In Jackson Heights" Screening

Where: Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Ave., Astoria
When: Various screenings through Jan. 31

Frederick Wiseman's three-hour opus on Jackson Heights, filmed in the early summer of 2014, captures a bit of the neighborhood's culture and conflict. It is screening in Queens at the Museum of the Moving Image through Jan. 31. Check their site for more specific times.

"Die Hard" Movie Parody

Where: Chain Theatre, 21-28 45th Rd., Long Island City
When: Friday and Saturday, 7 p.m.

Theater group The Usual Rejects will act out this classic action flick on stage, complete with audience participation and trivia. A $15 ticket gets you two free drinks and raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes.

Friday, Jan. 15

Irish Movie Night

Where: New York Irish Center, 1040 Jackson Ave., Long Island City
When: 8:15 p.m.

Join the New York Irish Center for its monthly movie night, this time featuring a screening of performances by Irish folk singer Luke Kelly, including some rarely seen footage. Free coffee, tea and popcorn will be served, and beer and wine will be available for purchase. Suggested donation is $11, $8 for students, seniors and unemployed.

Indoor Quiet Clubbing

Where: Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden, 29-19 24th Ave., Astoria 
When: 10 p.m.

Party in silence at this "quiet clubbing" event, where participants where headphones and dance to their own beat. Musical options will include 80s and 90s dance hits, and old-school hip-hop and R&B. Tickets will be $15 at the door.

Poetry Slam in Honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Where: Bethany French Baptist Church, 90-21 160th St., Jamaica
When: 7 p.m.

Local community youth organizations and elected officials will mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day by hosting a poetry slam. Poets and guest speakers will present original spoken word pieces inspired by King’s legacy. Their performances will focus on issues like race, social justice, anti-poverty efforts, and the civil rights movement. The event is free.

Saturday, Jan. 16

Animal Care Training

Where: Alley Pond Environmental Center, 228-06 Northern Blvd., Douglaston
When: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

This program teaches kids about the needs of animals and gives them hands-on experience in feeding, brushing and cleaning pets. Admission is $23. Space is limited to 8 participants. The program is for children ages 8-12. To register, go here.

Hip-Hop Boot Camp Workshop: Positive Mind, Body, and Soul = Good Music

Where: Laurelton Library, 134-26 225th Street, Laurelton
When: 2 to 3 p.m. 

Try this hip-hop workout, which will show you how to live a healthy lifestyle and have fun at the same time. This free program is for children and teens. Registration is not required.

Make It: One Block Challenge

Where: New York Hall of Science, 47-01 111th St., Corona
When: 1:30 to 5 p.m.

Kids 6 and up can learn how to use simple woodworking tools to build whatever they'd like out of a 3-inch block of wood. This workshop will help expand kids' skills and creativity. It's $3 per adult/child pair, in addition to NYSCI admission.

Sunday, Jan. 17

Ping Pong Mao Tournament

Where: Queens Museum, New York City Building, Flushing Meadows Corona Park
When: 12 to 5 p.m.

The Queens Museum is currently showing the first survey of artist Zhang Hongtu outside of the United States. This China-born and Queens-based artist is known for his work showing Mao Zedong in various forms, including cut out into a ping pong table. On Sunday, amateur players will have the chance to play on this special table. The winner of the tournament will receive a $100 gift certificate.
