STUYVESANT TOWN — A subway groper felt up a woman on an L train in view of police and would have escaped had he not returned to the scene of the crime, according to the NYPD.

David Oakley, 27, rubbed his groin against a woman’s butt on a Brooklyn-bound L train on Jan. 2 at 8:30 p.m., within eye shot of a police officer in the same car, authorities said.

Police attempted to stop Oakley when he got off the train at the First Avenue station, but he managed to run away, according to police.

Officers caught Oakley shortly after he escaped when he tried to reenter the same subway station, officials said.

Prosecutors charged Oakley with forcible touching, sexual abuse and resisting arrest. A judge released him without bail pending a Jan. 15 court date, records show.

A lawyer for Oakley did not return a call for comment.
