MASPETH — Some of your discarded Christmas trees are clumped sadly on the sidewalks awaiting a dump truck. Others will meet the shredder and be turned into mulch.
A few special trees, however, will find a second life this month in an installation through the end of January.
Artist Michael Neff collected several dozen trees from the streets of Brooklyn for his project "Suspended Forest," where they'll dangle in a grid shaped formation in the massive factory turned arts space - Knockdown Center - in Maspeth.
A "subtle pine fragrance of the trees" meets visitors, while the space offers "the opportunity for quiet contemplation," the artist's statement reads.
"The trees [will] shed their needles into halos on the smooth concrete floor below."
The opening reception for "Suspended Forest" will be this Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Knockdown Center located at 52-19 Flushing Ave. in Maspeth, Queens. The exhibit will be on display weekends through the end of January from 2 to 6 p.m.
