
Sophia and Ethan were the most popular names for girls and boys in New York City in 2014, according to the Department of Health. During that year, 740 Ethans and 586 Sophias were born in the city.
Sophia has reigned as number one for three years, while Ethan emerged at the top after two years of being number two.
The rankings represent the latest data released by the city.
The New York City-specific list is fairly similar to the national top 10 baby names of 2014 as provided by the Social Security Administration. Nationally, Noah and Emma claimed the top spots, while Ethan was ranked number six and Sophia number three.
For girls nationwide, Madison and Charlotte clung onto the top 10 list at nine and 10 respectively. For boys, Mason was number three nationally but didn't appear anywhere on New York’s boys top 10.
While some names were widely popular across racial groups in New York, such as Emma and Jayden, some groups had unique preferences that didn’t appear elsewhere.
For girls, Latino parents preferred Sofia, Camila, Victoria, and Valentina. Black parents opted for Madison, Aayliyah, Skylar, London and Fatoumata, among others. Asian parents seemed to prefer Angela, Grace, Claire and Alina most. The names Leah, Rachel, Esther, Sarah and Chaya were uniquely popular for daughters of white parents.
The names Dylan, Sebastian and Angel were popular for the sons of Latino parents. Black parents liked the names Skylar, Elijah and Amir for their sons, and Asian parents preferred Jayden, Lucas and Muhammad for theirs. The names David, Michael, Benjamin and Moshe were popular for sons of white parents.
The Health Department also released 2014 birth counts from each borough. Brooklyn had the highest birth count, with an estimated 42,190 births in 2014, ahead of second-place Queens at 26,937. The Bronx had 20,032, Manhattan 18,143 and Staten Island 5,255.
Together, the births in Brooklyn and Queens account for approximately 61 percent of the total births in New York City.
