MANHATTAN — A woman hit by a private garbage truck in Midtown East Wednesday morning has died of her injuries, police said.
Liana Platika, 84, was walking north on Third Avenue and crossing East 58th Street at 5:15 a.m. when a GMC garbage truck driving east on 58th Street hit her, severely injuring her lower body, NYPD officials said.
The driver of the garbage truck, a 59-year-old man whose name was not immediately released, initially kept going after the crash, but someone alerted him of the accident and he drove back to the scene, police said.
Platika, who lived in the Upper East Side, was taken to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she died of her injuries, police said.
The truck's driver was not immediately charged, police said.
