BROOKLYN — A gunman shot his ex-girlfriend and killed her current boyfriend before turning the gun on himself in East Flatbush Thursday evening, officials and family said.

Jerry Paterson, 39, of Queens, approached his 33-year-old ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend Kenly Joseph, 44, after they pulled up in a car in front of 298 E. 91st St., near Clarkson Avenue, officials and a cousin of a victim said. He opened fire at about 5:09 p.m., police said.

The bullets struck Joseph in the head and the woman in the torso, police said.

After firing at the car, Paterson then shot himself in the head, officials said.

A cousin of Joseph, who did not want to give his name, said Paterson was the woman's ex and she was currently dating Joseph.

"He was always smiling," the cousin said of Joseph. "He was a very nice guy."

Joseph worked a Sandhog, the union that digs tunnels for the subway, since 2011 and was a musician in his spare time, according to the cousin and a union representative.

"He could play any instrument you put in front of him, and he could sing," the cousin said. "That was his thing.

"I have no emotions right now. I'm in disbelief, I'm in shock."

Joseph was taken to Brookdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Paterson and the female victim were both taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The woman is listed in stable condition, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
