UPPER WEST SIDE — The charter elementary school Success Academy Upper West is asking the state to allow the school to add five more grades serving more than 300 additional students, according to a public notice and the school.
The charter school network currently serves students in kindergarten through fourth grade at its Upper West Side branch, in a building at 145 W. 84th St. that it shares with four public high schools.
The school's fifth grade is located in a building at 439 W. 49th St., where the DOE has already approved the charter to expand up to the eighth grade based on available space. However, the network still needs the state's OK to move forward with adding grades six through 10.
Success Academy Upper West is applying to expand to serve grades K-10 in keeping with its educational model, a spokeswoman said. The expansion would mean an increase from 565 students to 890, according to the DOE.
"Success Academy Upper West is one of the most high-performing, diverse, and sought-after schools in the city, and we look forward to serving more families," the spokeswoman said in a statement, noting that it has not yet applied for building space to serve grades eight through 10.
Charter schools must renew their charters every five years. If approved, the next five-year charter for Success Academy Upper West would begin on Aug. 1, 2016.
A hearing on the school's proposal will be held Monday night at 34 W. 118th St. at 6 p.m. Sign-in for those wishing to comment begins at 5:30 p.m.
