Well, that didn't take long.

It's only been a few hours since reports surfaced that former New York Yankee Don Mattingly will not return to the Los Angeles Dodgers as their manager next season, and Yankee fans are already hoping this means he will be back in The Bronx come 2016.

Mattingly has managed the Dodgers since 2011 and led them to three straight titles in the National League West from 2013 to 2015.

However, the team never made it particularly far into the playoffs, including this year, when they were knocked out in the first round by the New York Mets, who just clinched their first World Series berth since 2000 on Wednesday.

Mattingly played for the Yankees for his entire professional baseball career, from 1982 to 1995, and was rumored to be a candidate for the team's manager back in 2007 after Joe Torre's departure.

The job ultimately went with Joe Girardi instead, but after a few middling seasons and a quick playoff exit this year, some baseball fans now seem eager to reverse this decision.

Mattingly was a six-time All Star with the Yankees and won the league's MVP award in 1985, but he retired one season before the team started their long run of four World Series titles within five years.

Regardless of where his career goes next, Mattingly can always take comfort in knowing that he has already achieved the greatest honor an athlete can hope for: appearing as himself on "The Simpsons."
