MIDTOWN — The Taxi and Limousine Commission is set to yank the cord on the frequently broken TV screens in city cabs.
The monitors, which first appeared in the back seats of yellow taxis in 2006, will be eliminated and replaced with either smartphone or tablet-payment systems if a TLC proposal passes, according to TLC spokesman Allan Fromberg.
The blaring screens, which feature news, sports and business alerts, are widely disliked among taxi riders and can be difficult to turn off, officials said.
Drivers even complain that the audio runs even when their cabs were empty, according to CBS.
The proposal will be voted on Thursday.
