KIPS BAY — A man has been charged with slashing a 7 Eleven employee when the worker tried to call the police on him for trying to leave the store with 19 packs of M&Ms that he didn't pay for, NYPD said.
Bernard Santiago, 54, tried to walk out of the 7 Eleven on Third Avenue between East 28th and East 29th streets with the hoard of candy, but was confronted by an employee just as he got past the door at roughly 8:20 p.m. on Sept. 26, police said.
The staffer escorted Santiago to the store's backroom, and when the worker threatened to call the police, Santiago whipped out a knife and slashed the employee on the hand before running out of the store, police said.
Responding officers spotted Santiago in Bellevue South Park and he was arrested after a witness identified him, police said.
Santiago was charged with petit larceny and assault. He was held on $5,000 bail and is due back in court on Oct. 2, according to court records.
Santiago’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 7 Eleven declined to comment.
