INWOOD — Uptowners are pushing to name an Inwood intersection in honor of a popular bakery owner whose death last fall shook the community.

Inwood residents have launched a petition to co-name West 214th Street and Broadway after Carrot Top Pastries owner Renee Mancino. The petition, which seeks to name the corner "Renee Mancino Way," has picked up 170 signatures since it was started on Monday.

"Renee was known equally for her delicious baked goods and her remarkable dedication to the community," Inwood resident Tony Martinetti wrote in the petition. "For over 35 years, Renee generously donated to senior centers, little leagues, neighborhood organizations, cultural institutions, historic houses, colleges, universities, local police, fire and sanitation departments."

Mancino, who operated two bakeries in Inwood and Washington Heights for more than 30 years, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot in her Washington Heights shop in November 2014. Her death rattled the community, and residents left flowers and messages outside of her Inwood shop for weeks afterward.

Those who signed the petition said Mancino was deserving of the honor.

"I'm signing because Carrot Top has been such a seminal part of my life in Washington Heights," Adria Quinones wrote.
