FLATIRON — A woman was critically injured when a van hit her in the Flatiron Monday morning, police said.

The 51-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was crossing the street at 8:48 a.m. when a westbound Ford van turned left from East 21st Street onto Fifth Avenue and struck her, an NYPD spokesman said.

"It was terrible," said Jose Arias, who was in the area for a dental appointment.

The driver hopped out of the van and took of his shirt to wipe blood off the woman, who lay face down with injuries to her head, Aria said.

"He just kept saying, 'Oh my, God. Oh my, God.' I cried," Arias said.

She was taken in critical condition to Bellevue Hospital, police said.

The driver remained at the scene, police said.

There were no immediate arrests or tickets issued, police said.
