VIDEO: See Richard Gere Play a Homeless Man in the City

By Savannah Cox | September 9, 2015 4:40pm

Richard Gere is back, and sadder than ever.

Having already played an officer, gentleman and a slick, escort-seeking businessman in his glitzier past, Richard Gere has taken on a new — and decidedly not  "pretty" — role as a homeless man living in New York City.

In the just-released film, Time Out of Mind, Gere sheds his pinstripes and Hollywood charisma for tattered track suits and aimless isolation as George Hammond, one of New York City's tens of thousands of homeless people.

Sometime between begging for change and catching glimpses of his estranged bartender daughter, though, Gere seems to have shed something else: his bad movie streak.

Gere's performance as a homeless New Yorker has been described by The New York Times as "fascinating," and Time Out praises Gere for "[stripping] himself entirely of artifice" to paint a "remarkably committed portrait of NYC homelessness."

Will Gere's performance as George Hammond make audiences forget his regrettable role in Runaway Bride? You'll have to see for yourself. Watch the trailer for Time Out of Mind, below, or see it in theaters this week:
