BROOKLYN — Hold onto your food scraps and leftovers — the city would like them.
Red Hook, Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens will be included in the Department of Sanitation's expanded organic waste collection beginning next month, officials announced last week.
Starting Oct. 1, households that are eligible — single-family homes and buildings with up to nine units — will receive an indoor kitchen container for waste, an instruction brochure and an outdoor brown bin, according to DSNY and Community Board 6.
The program allows residents to dispose of food and yard waste, like grass trimmings, in brown bins for curbside collection by the DSNY. The organic trash could also include food-soiled paper, household plants, fruits, veggies, meats and bones.
The collection for the south Brooklyn neighborhoods, including the Columbia Street Waterfront District, will begin the week of Oct. 5.
Gowanus and north Park Slope will also be included in the expansion in the week of Oct. 26.
The brown bins are placed for curbside collection depending on the area's recycling days.
Part of the organic waste will be turned into compost, which is used by local greening groups like urban farms and community gardens.
The program will also expand in Queens this year with Ozone Park and Lindenwood starting the week of Oct. 5, South Ozone Park during the week of Oct. 12 and Howard Beach and Hamilton Beach the week of Nov. 2.
