BROOKLYN — The driver who fatally struck a 59-year-old woman crossing the street in Brooklyn Sunday before fleeing turned himself in to police Monday, authorities said.
Marlene Zotti was crossing Ninth Avenue, near 42nd Street, at around 12:30 a.m. when she was hit by a white minivan less than a block away from her home, police said.
She was rushed to Lutheran Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, officials said.
Zotti, who used a walker, went shopping with her brother just a couple hours before the accident, according to published reports. She was carrying groceries when she was hit.
The driver, who was headed northbound on Ninth Avenue, made a right turn onto 42nd Street after hitting Zotti and fled the scene, police said.
Authorities said that 50-year-old Marco Ortiz of Park Slope turned himself into the 68th Precinct in Bay Ridge around 6:30 a.m. Monday after officials released surveillance video of his car leaving the scene Sunday evening.
Ortiz, who police said had no prior arrests, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
