A new baby porcupine has arrived at the Bronx Zoo.

The male porcupine was born on July 28 and is the third child for its parents, named Alice and Patrick.

He is now on display with the rest of his family at the facility's newly renovated Children's Zoo.

The porcupine's most recognizable trait, its quills, are very soft at birth but start to harden just a few hours later, according to the Bronx Zoo. They continue to grow and harden as it matures.

Porcupines cannot shoot their quills, contrary to popular belief, but the quills do have tiny barbs on their tips that pull them from the porcupine's skin when they are hooked in flesh and painfully imbed them in predators.
