Good news for the ferret-loving community: the Grand Army Plaza ferret has found a home, even if she hasn't been reunited with her owner yet.
A 24-year-old Crown Heights woman who found a female ferret near the bike racks of Grand Army Plaza last week told DNAinfo New York the friendly critter has been adopted by a ferret foster home in Long Island.
Brittany P., the woman who plastered a "Found Ferret" poster around Prospect Heights last week, said the ferret bee-lined right for her as she unlocked her bike near Prospect Park last Wednesday.
“It ran out from the woods,” she said. “It just ran up to me and my friends and we were like, ‘Uh, What do we do!’ So, we picked it up and it was very friendly, very sweet.
“She had a little dirt on her head, but overall [she] was in pretty good shape."
She and a friend took care of the cuddly creature for five days before a Facebook group dedicated to fostering ferrets contacted Brittany and took it off her hands. For the most part, the pet stayed with her friend in Park Slope because her own living situation isn’t exactly ferret-friendly, she said.
“We played with her as much as we could,” she said. “I would have loved to keep her if I could have pets.”
She said the original owner — if he or she is out there — is welcome to contact her to get the ferret back from its new Long Island home, but so far, no one has come forward.
For the record, it is illegal to keep a ferret as a pet in New York City. This spring, the Board of Health considered lifting the city’s 16-year ferret ban, but ultimately voted against it.
