LOWER EAST SIDE — Students fared better on the state’s math and English tests this year than last year, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced earlier this week.

Overall proficiency standards for third- to eighth-graders were up, officials said. About 35 percent of students met proficiency standards in math this year, up a percentage point from 2014, while 30 percent of students met proficiency standards in English, up two percentage points from last year.

Test results in the Lower East Side and the East Village however, were a mixed bag. Some schools like New Explorations Into Science, Technology and Math (Nest+m) and East Village Community School performed better on the tests than the city overall, while other schools did worse, data shows.

In a few other schools, students did just as well as or slightly better on one test but performed worse on the other.

According to data released by the Department of Education, an achievement gap persists, with black and Hispanic students continuing to lag behind. De Blasio said he would address the achievement gap through the city’s Universal Pre-K program and other programs.
