► Second Annual Rockaway Beach Super Boardwalk Fair
Where: Beach 95th Street and the boardwalk
Check out this second annual flea market right on the brand-new boardwalk in Rockaway Beach this Saturday and Sunday. Vendors will offer a wide array of products, including clothing, vintage items and food. It's open the same hours as the beach, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Friday, July 17
Where: Queens Council on the Arts, 37-11 35th Ave., Astoria
Musicians Eleanor Dubinsky and Frank Ponzio will lead this interactive demonstration on how to actively listen to music to identify elements like rhythm and timbre. The two-hour event starts at 6 p.m. and will feature live music performed by both artists. Tickets cost $10 (free for Queens Council on the Arts members).
Saturday, July 18
► City of Water Day at Gantry State Park
Where: Gantry Plaza State Park, Long Island City
Celebrate the East River during the Waterfront Alliance’s annual City of Water Day, which features waterfront events across the city. Activities at Gantry State Park will include kayaking, yoga, catch-and-release fishing, gardening and storytelling for kids. The free event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
► Hands-On History: America the Beautiful
Where: King Manor Museum, 150-03 Jamaica Ave., Jamaica
Celebrate the nation’s founding during this free craft program for kids of all ages. During the workshop, which will run from noon to 3 p.m., children will make paper American flags and listen to stories about the country’s history.
► Crafts at Corona Plaza
Where: Corona Plaza, 103rd Street and Roosevelt Avenue, Corona
The UNI Project brings hands-on, family-friendly art and a portable library to Corona Plaza on 103rd Street, off Roosevelt Avenue. Kids can check out books and learn about stenciling and graffiti during the "With Pride" project. Using their own names as inspiration, they can design lettering, build a stencil and then make lyrics from their name — all to display their cultural and family pride. The event is free for everyone and runs from 2:30-6:30 p.m.
Sunday, July 19
► Birding at the Ridgewood Reservoir
Where: Ridgewood Reservoir, Vermont Place, Ridgewood
(off the Jackie Robinson Parkway, near the Brooklyn/Queens border)
Check out falcons, hawks, cardinals and other New York City birds with the Parks Department's Urban Rangers, which is offering guided tours at the Ridgewood Reservoir. The event is free, and is perfect for kids. Aspiring birders will meet at the main park entrance across from the Vermont Place parking lot in Ridgewood. Wear comfortable shoes and bring binoculars. It runs from 10 a.m. until noon.
► Screening of “Sesame Street Presents: Follow that Bird”
Where: Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35 Ave., Astoria
The museum will present a special 30th anniversary screening of “Sesame Street Presents: Follow that Bird.” The 1985 film tells the story of Big Bird’s journey back home to Sesame Street. Emilio Delgado, who plays Luis on “Sesame Street” and Craig Shemin, president of The Jim Henson Legacy, will introduce the film at 1 p.m. Tickets are $12.
► Queensboro Symphony Orchestra Performs in Flushing
Where: St. Ann’s Church, 58-02 146th St., Flushing
Listen to Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart and Beethoven during a free summer chamber music concert performed by the Queensboro Symphony Orchestra. During the event, which begins at 7 p.m., the orchestra will play Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4, Vivaldi’s Concerto for 2 Oboes, Mozart’s Divertimento K. 136 and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14 Opus 131.
► Summer Electronic Waste Recycling Event
Where: Queens Botanical Garden Parking Lot, 42-80 Crommelin St., Flushing
Drop off your unwanted electronics at this free recycling event at the Queens Botanical Garden, which will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. After dropping off the gadgets, kids will make crafts out of recycled and repurposed items.
