WILLIAMSBURG — Trader Joe's could be the next big retailer to open in Williamsburg.

The popular California-based grocery store chain plans to anchor a new development at 206 Kent Ave., Crain's New York reported on Thursday.

The company has reportedly signed a lease for an 18,000-square-foot store on the ground floor of a mixed-use building with office space and and retail.

The lot, which is zoned for manufacturing purposes, is currently vacant.

The owner of the property purchased the more than 22,000-square-foot lot in January 2014 for $18 million, according to Department of FInance records.

Trader Joe's and property owner Alliance Private Capital did not immediately respond to request for comment.

The Williamsburg location of Trader Joe's would be the chain's second in Brooklyn, with the first in Cobble Hill at 130 Court St.

The chain has five locations total in New York, including spots in Union Square, Rego Park, Chelsea and the Upper West Side.

Trader Joe's is not the first big chain to join the North Brooklyn neighborhood once occupied mostly by independent stores.

Whole Foods will be opening at 242 Bedford Ave. soon. Starbucks opened two locations in the neighborhood last year.

And Apple reportedly plans to open at 247 Bedford Ave.

Trader Joe's location at 206 Kent Ave. would be close to burgeoning new developments in South Williamsburg. A DNAinfo New York analysis found that some 600 apartments would be ready for move-in by 2015 — not counting the hundreds that the massive Domino Sugar Factory project would bring to the waterfront.

Already, Key Food followed the trend of luxury apartments in South Williamsburg by opening its upscale grocery store spinoff in South Williamsburg at 11 Broadway in 2013.
