EAST FLATBUSH — The Kings County Hospital is launching a new farmers market outside the medical center in hopes of inspiring its neighbors to live a healthier lifestyle.

The market will offer fresh vegetables, fruits, juices and flowers on Clarkson Avenue between East 37th and East 38th streets every Wednesday beginning July 8,  according to the city’s Health and Hospitals Corporation.

In addition, participating farmers are encouraged to give on-site cooking demonstrations and provide healthy eating tips, the HHC said.

With the new Kings County market and a second market to open Thursday at the Gouverneur Health Center in the Lower East Side, HHC will host a total of 11 produce markets at health facilities this year, up from nine in 2014.

The expansion is part of an effort to bring more affordable, locally-grown produce to areas of the city where residents don’t have easy access to quality fruits and vegetables, the group said.

“Farmers markets directly support HHC’s efforts to build healthy communities and we’re very happy to keep expanding the program to bring affordable food options to more and more neighborhoods,” Dr. Ram Raju, president of HHC, said in a statement.

Shoppers using the EBT/SNAP, Health Bucks, Green Checks or WIC programs are welcome at all of the markets, according to HHC.

The Kings County Hospital market, which will run through Nov. 25, will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
