CROWN HEIGHTS — Calling neighborhood artists of all ages! The Friends of Brower Park are looking for up to 40 artistically inclined locals to sell artwork at the first North Crown Heights Festival of the Arts, a public display of Crown Heights’ talent set for August 15, organizers said.

“The neighborhood is changing, so it seemed like it would be a good idea to have artists get together in the park, for people get to know each other, to see the diversity through the artwork and through shared talents,” said Sandra Hawkins, a member of Friends of Brower Park and art collector spearheading the effort.

The group is seeking artists young and old, with a display section for “junior” artists from 14 to 18 years old separate from the adult vendors.

“We’re hoping to encourage the young people to come out, show off their work, not be intimidated… and reap the rewards from their talents,” Hawkins said.

Anyone who creates handcrafted work such as paintings, drawings, photography and crafts is welcome to apply through the Brower Park website before July 24, she said. If chosen, vendors in the junior category will pay $45 and adult artist will pay $65 to participate in the festival.

In addition to artwork, the festival will feature the Brazilian samba reggae band Batala NYC and multiple food vendors, Hawkins said.

“We wanted to bring something different to the park,” she said.

The North Crown Heights Festival of the Arts will be held on the lawn in Brower Park at the corner of Kingston Avenue and Park Place on Saturday, August 15. For more information, visit FriendsofBrowerPark.org.
