Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced Tuesday that after a worldwide casting search, Tom Holland, the British actor best known for his starring performance in the Victoria Palace Theatre's production of "Billy Elliot the Musical," will follow in the footsteps of fellow actor Tobey Maguire in playing Queens resident Peter Parker (and his alter ego Spider Man) in an upcoming installment of the wildly popular franchise.
Parker, who hails from Forest Hills, was most recently played by Andrew Garfield, who received mixed reviews in the role.
Marvel also recently announced that when the Spider-Man comics series relaunches this fall, the superhero's mantle will be taken up by Miles Morales, a half Latino, half African-American character introduced into the Spider-Man universe in 2011.
Ellie Evangelista's performance in the role will remain limited to the parade circuit and playtime, for the time being.
