UPPER WEST SIDE — A woman fought off a man who tried to strangle her on West 78th Street early Sunday morning, police said.

The 23-year-old victim was walking along the street, opposite from the Collegiate School, when a man attacked her from behind at about 5 a.m. on June 7, police said.

The attacker put his hand over the woman's mouth, his arm around her neck and started to choke her, police said.

The woman managed to fight him off, and the suspect fled in an unknown direction, police said.

Surveillance video from the NYPD shows the suspect wearing jeans, a black shirt with white graphics and a dark jacket or sweatshirt.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD's hotline at 800-577-TIPS or via nypdcrimestoppers.com or by texting tips to 274637(CRIMES) and then entering TIP577.
