BROOKLYN — A Brooklyn man was sentenced to 17 years in prison Monday for shooting and paralyzing an 11-year-old girl in Bed-Stuy in 2013, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.
Kane Cooper, 19, fired 10 shots at several purported members of the “Gates Avenue Mafia” while they stood in front 590 Gates Ave. on May 31, 2013.
Tayloni Mazyck was sitting in front of her building at 600 Gates Ave. with her mother and cousins when one of the bullets struck her spine, paralyzing her from the waist down.
Cooper pleaded guilty to first-degree assault in May.
“Today’s sentence spares the child victim in this case the trauma of testifying about the life-altering day when she was shot by this defendant,” Brooklyn DA Ken Thompson said in a statement.
“She can now go on with her life knowing he will spend many years in prison as punishment for what he did. Senseless gun violence between gangs has devastating consequences and will not be tolerated.”
