RED HOOK — The Vendors are back in town.

Red Hook's award-winning food trucks will be dishing out their signature Latin American street cuisine all summer long at the ball field beginning May 2.

This year marks the 41st anniversary of the vendors' food fair at the baseball grounds, located on the block bound by Hicks, Lorraine, Clinton and Bay streets, said Cesar Fuentes, executive director of Red Hook Food Vendors.

The most popular trucks will be back for this summer, including Colombia, Country Boys, Piaxtlan, and Ecuadorian, which will be serving its cerviche and empanadas with beef, chicken and cheese.

The Solber Pupusas truck was started 15 years ago by husband-wife team Rafael Soler and Reina Bermudez and specializes in Salvadorian fare like tamales, steak with rice and beans, said Carlos Morales, Reina's cousin.

As its name suggests, the truck also makes pupusas, a pancake-like snack with fillings like chicken, cod fish, chorizo, zucchini or spinach, Morales said.

Many of the vendors have been honored with "Vendy Awards" in recent years, like El Olomega, a family-run truck that won in 2013.

Janet and Esperanza Lainez started the business more than two decades ago, and people flock to their truck every year for stuffed pupusas, said Marcos Lainez, Janet's brother who helps run the business and is a representative for RHFV.

"It's like a patty stuffed with different kinds of fillings," Lainez said.

The New York Times recently featured an adapted version of the Lainez family recipe, but El Olomega will be whipping up the real deal on Saturday with 14 types of fillings, including the traditional pork and chicken or the Loroco flower and sweet plantains.

"We just chop it and put it in the pupusa," Lainez said. "With cheese of course."
