QUEENS — An 80-year-old woman was struck and killed by a car while she was crossing an East Elmhurst street Tuesday afternoon, according to the NYPD.

The woman was walking north against the light across Astoria Boulevard at 80th Street about 2:50 p.m. when a Nissan Altima being driven east on the boulevard by a 28-year-old woman hit her, police said.

The elderly woman was transported to Elmhurst General Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The Altima's driver told investigators she was trailing a large black SUV which blocked her view as it slowed to avoid hitting the 80-year-old, an NYPD official said at a 115th Precinct community council meeting Tuesday.

The woman walked out from in front of the SUV and was hit by the passenger's side of the Altima's windshield, police said.

The driver remained at the scene and was not initially charged, police said.
