MANHATTAN — One person was seriously injured when a fire tore through the 17th floor of an apartment tower in East Harlem Tuesday night, the FDNY said.

The blaze started about 11:50 p.m. inside 1295 Fifth Ave., near Tito Puento Way. It spewed a column of smoke up the side of the building, officials and witnesses said.

One person was seriously hurt but taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition, an FDNY spokesman said.

Another civilian and two firefighters were treated for minor injuries at the same hospital, officials said.

About 138 firefighters helped bring the fire under control about 1:21 a.m., FDNY officials said.

Fire marshals will determine what sparked the blaze, officials said.
